Short answerPlan the shoot at a quiet time of day, bring a snack and a cuddly toy and let the child get used to the place. We take our time: a crying fit or a nap in between is part of it.

Eight tips

  1. Choose a time your child is usually cheerful, often after a nap.
  2. Make sure your child has eaten, and bring a snack.
  3. Tell them beforehand what is going to happen, in simple words.
  4. Bring a favourite cuddly toy or a familiar song.
  5. Choose comfortable clothing; see what to wear to a photoshoot.
  6. Do not pressure them: 'smile' rarely works, play does.
  7. Let a parent join in; that gives the nicest, most spontaneous photos.
  8. Allow for the little things: an extra nappy or a rest is no problem.
